Operator experience
We've been the agency. We've also been the merchant.
Shawn Moreau co-founded Beard Coalition, helped build the brand and its eCommerce operation, grew the business and ultimately sold it.
It's included here not as a founder story, but because it explains why Gapstow's recommendations tend to sound different from agency recommendations.
Advice costs the person taking it
When you're the merchant, a recommendation isn't a slide. You're spending your own money, committing to inventory, watching cash flow, absorbing the operational complexity and answering to customers when something goes wrong.
Every "we should also…" has a bill attached and a person who has to run it afterwards.
What that changes about agency work
It makes you slower to recommend a rebuild and quicker to ask what the current site is actually failing to do. It makes you suspicious of scope that grows for reasons nobody can trace back to a business outcome. It makes maintainability feel like a cost, not a nicety.
It's also why several of Gapstow's stated beliefs are about restraint — not automating everything, not adding another app, not treating a redesign as a strategy.
Recommendations feel different when you've had to live with them.
Building, growing, selling
The arc matters as much as the outcome. Building a brand, building the eCommerce operation behind it, growing the business and eventually selling it exposes the parts of eCommerce that never appear in a project scope: operations, cash, fulfillment realities, and the compounding cost of decisions made early for convenience.
Gapstow can advise, lead, manage and build — because it has had to.
